Prevention services
Here at Burloak Centre Dentistry, we encourage patients to take diligent care of their smile for a variety of reasons. Not only is this done to avoid the development of cavities, it is also to avoid the development of periodontal disease. Prevention for periodontal disease includes brushing after every meal, flossing nightly, and visiting the dentist on a regular basis for cleanings and examinations. At Burloak Centre Dentistry, we encourage our patients to attend their recall appointments every six months to maintain their oral health.
Diagnostics
If patients are not actively preventing periodontal disease, they may find themselves with an irreversible condition called periodontitis. The early stage of periodontal disease, known as gingivitis, is often characterized by bleeding when patients brush and floss their teeth. The gum tissues may be red and inflamed, which is also indicative of gingivitis. This is a crucial point for patients to have an evaluation done to get a proper diagnosis and to seek treatment. Without treatment for gingivitis, the infection can get worse and advance to periodontitis. This is the later stage of periodontal disease and can result in the loss of bone, gum tissue, and even natural teeth. At this point, the condition is irreversible, but it can be controlled with periodontal treatment.
Treatment
Treatment of gum disease varies, depending on the stage it has reached. The early stage known as gingivitis may be addressed with a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums. The later stages may require additional services such as scaling and root planing, during which the dentist cleans the roots of the teeth. This is a more invasive procedure but can help in reducing the infection. Additionally, antibiotics may be used to address the active infection while also removing bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth and gums. Treatment is necessary as soon as possible for the best outcome.
Will I have periodontal disease forever?
Periodontal disease is considered a chronic condition once it has developed. Treatment as soon as possible is encouraged to keep the condition controlled and reduce the damage done by the disease. Once it has developed, it will be an ongoing problem for patients, which is why prevention is so important. Patients who have periodontal disease will visit their dentist more often until the condition is controlled and then they can return to their routine six-month appointments with Dr. Shefali Tuli and her staff.
What treatment is right for me?
Treatment for periodontal disease will vary from patient to patient based on the stage their condition has reached and whether the infection needs antibiotics, either topical or oral. During the initial diagnosis, Dr. Shefali Tuli will assess the stage of disease and discuss the possible treatment options. She wants to ensure all treatments are as conservative as possible while still providing effective results.
