Cavities are one of the biggest concerns in children’s dentistry, making up one of the most common childhood diseases. Fortunately, your pediatric dentist in Oakville is very familiar with not only the statistics on cavities but also with the fact that most cavities develop in certain areas of the mouth. Using her advanced knowledge, Dr. Tuli works with individual patients and their parents to formulate a plan for cavity prevention.
While brushing and flossing are critical to the prevention of cavities in children, there are additional factors that must be considered. In addition to promoting and demonstrating proper technique for oral hygiene, Dr. Tuli also offers specific treatments aimed at reducing the risk of cavities, including fluoride treatments and dental sealants.
Dental sealants, in particular, are designed to minimize the risk of cavities in teeth that have pits and grooves on the chewing surface. The sooner that dental sealants can be applied to susceptible teeth, the better a child’s chance of maintaining better oral health.
The problem with pits and fissures on tooth surfaces is that these deep areas can easily trap tiny particles of food and sugar residue from beverages. Due to their depth, pits can also be difficult to empty once debris has accumulated in these spaces. Where there is debris, there will be bacteria, and where there is bacteria, there will be weakening of enamel and, eventually, a cavity.
In a single office visit, usually following a professional cleaning, sealant material, which is a liquid plastic, can be applied to teeth with deep grooves. Following application of this liquid, the material is hardened using a special light. In several studies, sealants have been shown to inhibit the accumulation of debris in teeth and thus reduce the instance of cavities. With continued care, the applied dental sealant can last for several years. As a part of her routine dental exam, Dr. Tuli will assess the condition of dental sealants in patients who have received this treatment. If and when needed, sealants can be quickly and painlessly reapplied.
