Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
At Burloak Centre Dentistry, our practice revolves around you, and we are dedicated to providing gentle, convenient care
for residents of Oakville and surrounding areas. We understand that many people suffer from nervousness, or even fear, when visiting a dentist. For some patients, the anxiousness simply fades away as they receive gentle treatment in our comfortable office, delivered by people who actually care. However, fear is not always easily overcome. Therefore, Nitrous Oxide is an invaluable service for countless patients, who find it impossible to relax in a dental office.
Types of Nitrous Oxide
We offer three sedative options, to meet the varying needs of our patients. Inhaled Nitrous Oxide
: Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, is the mildest form of Nitrous Oxide. It is delivered via a mask, and takes effect almost immediately. Because nitrous is neutralized with oxygen before you leave our office, there is no lingering grogginess.
Oral Nitrous Oxide
: This method is the preference of most needle-phobic patients. You are given a prescription and the medication is taken orally, prior to treatment. We do not begin any dental work until the sedative has taken effect and you are fully relaxed.
IV Nitrous Oxide
: The sedative medication is delivered directly into your system intravenously. This technique gives the doctor precision control over dosage, which can be increased or decreased at any time to optimize your comfort. IV Nitrous Oxide is often preferred for lengthy procedures, because the effects will not wear off before your appointment is over.
Benefits of Nitrous Oxide
We do not use general anesthesia, as you would expect in a hospital setting. There are several levels of Nitrous Oxide, none of which force unconsciousness. You will be conscious, in control of your body, and able to communicate at all times. Although you may become so relaxed that you drift off to sleep, you will be able to wake at any time. The most obvious benefit is the ability to relax for high-fear patients. Nitrous Oxide may also be beneficial for:
